The Global Health Network hosts a number of training resources for health-related research for a network of over 1 million users.
As a WHO collaborating centre working with WHO’s Science for Health Department, The Global Health Network is pleased to highlight a new core training resource for anyone interested in improving the quality of evidence to support improvements in the health of patients, communities, and populations.
Until now, the cornerstones of clinical trial standards have been ICH guidance, primarily aimed at trials generating data for marketing authorization of investigational medicinal products, alongside the universal ethical principles set out in the Declaration of Helsinki and the more detailed ethical recommendations in the CIOMS/WHO guidelines.
There has until now never been clinical trials guidance from a public health and clinical practice perspective, for those primarily interested in changing clinical practice without a need to submit data to regulators. This would include for non-commercial trials, or pragmatic trials embedded in healthcare.
This gap is now filled with WHO guidance on best practices for clinical trials
https://community.theglobalhealthnetwork.org/c/1d6KLNmNQRbN33XVM8W9QpAd published in 2024, and now in 2026 an online training course on the design, implementation and reporting of clinical trials, focusing on the key scientific and ethical considerations. The intention is to demystify the concept of clinical trials for a very wide audience, and support the democratization of clinical research in primary care, at all levels of the health systems and for any disease or health condition in any country in the world.
The course is free to access and provides a confirmation of completion certificate. It is delivered via the WHO Academy platform.
The launch event will feature the WHO Chief Scientist, Dr Sylvie Briand, and learners who have already completed the course, and course ambassadors.

Introductory Webinar: Hackathon for Reproductive, Maternal, and Child Health Data in Ethiopia
Date and time: 21 May 2026 | 15:00 – 16:30 (BST)
The Global Health Data Science Hub is organising a hackathon focused on addressing locally relevant research questions in Ethiopia related to reproductive, maternal, and child health. The hackathon will run over the course of one month and will utilise publicly available datasets.
Participants may register individually or as part of a team and will be allocated a specific research question to explore. Individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to take part.
If you are interested in learning more about the hackathon and how to participate, you are invited to attend an introductory webinar on 21 May at 15:00 BST. The session will provide an overview of the subject area, the dataset, the hackathon rules, and the registration process.

Applications now open for the 2026 Vivli AMR Surveillance Data Challenge
Researchers, data scientists, and students are invited to analyze data from the Vivli AMR Register, one of the largest open repositories of industry AMR surveillance data in the world, collected from patients across 89 countries over two decades. Teams of 2-5 have 8 weeks to submit their findings, with expressions of interest due 26 May. Up to $10,000 in awards available, plus travel grants to present at an infectious disease conference.

Explore the interactive toolkit to lay the groundwork for establishing your own Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) group
How can a patient advisory group be established for research? Where can potential members be identified? What does a compensation policy for public contributors look like, and where should the process begin? The Ziauddin University Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement group in Pakistan developed a toolkit to address these questions. The toolkit provides practical guidance and ready-to-use templates covering all stages of setting up a public involvement initiative in health research.
This toolkit was developed in Pakistan, piloted in Ireland, India, and Japan, and can support the initiation of public involvement initiatives in health research across different global contexts.

New Research into Policy podcast episode with Dr Rachel Obonose Titus on the EDCTP Knowledge Hub

In this episode, Dr Guétawendé Job Wilfried Nassa from the West Africa network of excellence for clinical trials in TB, AIDS, and Malaria (WANETAM) and The Global Health Network speaks with Dr Rachel Obonose Titus, a pharmacist and public health researcher specialising in pharmacy administration, health advocacy, and emergency preparedness.
Dr Titus’s PhD research at Obafemi Awolowo University explored innovative approaches to managing community pharmacies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work led to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support community pharmacy operations during public health emergencies.

The Global Cancer Research Hub invites you to share your views on the barriers and gaps that exist across cancer care, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and clinical research.
By capturing perspectives on priority cancers, challenges, capacity needs, and opportunities, the survey aims to highlight areas where training, infrastructure, and policy support can strengthen cancer care and research, and to identify potential partners for collaborative action. The results from the survey will help inform future resources and activities on the Global Cancer Research Knowledge Hub. It takes an estimated 10-15 minutes.
