The traditional "ivory tower" model of scientific research is increasingly being replaced by a paradigm that values inclusivity, trust, and societal relevance. While Community and Public Engagement (CPE) has garnered attention as a critical element of the research ecosystem, its implementation often remains peripheral in research functions. In this second webinar of a four-part series, we sustain discussion on how to "Institutionalise" CPE within the African research context. This webinar will explore the necessary "systemic turn" required to shift CPE into a structural, sustainable part of the scientific research system - from organizational strategy, to developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and building the evidence base through Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL).

Protecting Women and Girls from the Impact of Climate Change
Date and time: 16 April 2026 | 08:00 - 09:30 BST
Climate change is a growing threat to global health, but its effects are not felt equally. Heat-related health risks are especially important during pregnancy, when exposure to extreme heat has been linked to preterm birth, stillbirth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes. Yet the biological pathways and social factors shaping these risks are still not fully understood.
This webinar will introduce the Heat in Pregnancy–India Consortium, a multidisciplinary research programme examining how extreme heat affects pregnant and lactating women. The consortium brings together three strands of work: population-level epidemiological analysis of heat and pregnancy outcomes; individual-level assessment of heat, humidity, air pollution, and physiological responses during and after pregnancy; and research into women’s lived experiences alongside policy responses. Together, these findings aim to strengthen the evidence needed for climate-resilient maternal and newborn care.

From Hypothesis to Implementation: Designing Rigorous Clinical Trials in Gestational Diabetes
Date and time: 8 April 2026 | 12:00 GMT
The next Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (HeLTI) early career researcher and trainee seminar will feature Dr. Lulu Wang, M.D., Physician, Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University.
This seminar will explore how to better translate a scientific idea into a high-quality clinical trial in the field of gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes represents a growing global health challenge that affects both maternal and fetal outcomes. Treatment decisions often rely on high-quality clinical evidence. Therefore, well-designed clinical trials are essential to evaluate new interventions, optimize management strategies, and improve pregnancy outcomes. To join visit:

Calling cancer researchers: Help build a collaborative global cancer research community
The Global Cancer Research Hub invites you to share your views on the barriers and gaps that exist across cancer care, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and clinical research.
By capturing perspectives on priority cancers, challenges, capacity needs, and opportunities, the survey aims to highlight areas where training, infrastructure, and policy support can strengthen cancer care and research, and to identify potential partners for collaborative action. The results from the survey will help inform future resources and activities on the Global Cancer Research Knowledge Hub. It takes an estimated 10-15 minutes.

New course module: Ethical, legal, and practical concerns for data reuse
The latest module in the Data and Sample Governance for Biomedical Research course, Ethical, legal, and practical concerns for data reuse, is now available.
This free, online course is designed for researchers, data stewards, ethics committee members, funders, and policymakers working to enable equitable, cross-national partnerships and build transparent, responsible, and responsive governance for biomedical data and sample reuse.
This course was developed by the European Clinical Research Alliance on Infectious Diseases (ECRAID) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), in collaboration with the Coordination Mechanism for Cohorts and Trials Project (CoMeCT), the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO), CERCLE – the Coalition for Equitable Research in Low-Resource Settings, the World Health Organization’s Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO TDR), and The Global Health Network, to address a growing gap between the increasing need to reuse biomedical data and samples and the skills required to govern that reuse responsibly.
